Gravity Time
Isaac Newton couldn’t have seen it coming, but gravity time is an increasingly important concept in business. Gravity time is about creating super focused moments of teamwork and collaboration as opposed to requiring that everyone on your team work in close physical proximity on a regular basis.
Working from home is more popular than ever, but it can mean that a team is physically scattered. Some business owners require that their employees at least be on-site a couple of days per week so there’s always someone capable around—but what if they’re going about it all wrong?
What if, instead, you permitted everyone to work whenever and wherever they wanted, as long as everyone committed to being at the office during a specific window—say, Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.? That’s gravity time. During gravity time, all hands are on deck. Anything that needs to be discussed in person can be handled. Instead of scheduling random meetings throughout the week, this is super focused time that requires everyone to be present, physically and mentally, and bring their A-game.
The benefits of gravity time
- It allows people the freedom and flexibility to make their own schedules outside of gravity time, which can help attract and retain top talent
- Unless you run the kind of office in which you need physical presence during business hours, you can seriously cut back on office space—and maybe even give up your office entirely in favor of meeting at an alternative location during gravity time
- Your team will be hyper-productive during gravity time rather than slogging through numerous scattered meetings throughout the week
